Ocean Acidification and Aquacultured Seaweeds: Progress and Knowledge Gaps
نویسندگان
چکیده
This systematic review aimed to synthesise the existing studies regarding effects of ocean acidification (OA) on seaweed aquaculture. Ocean scenarios may increase productivity aquacultured seaweeds, but this depends species-specific tolerance ranges. Conversely, be reduced, with ensuing economic losses. We specifically addressed questions on: how seaweeds acclimatise an in oceanic CO2; OA photosynthetic rates and nutrient uptake; knowledge gaps mitigation measures for farming environments. Articles were searched by using Google Scholar, followed Scopus Web Science databases, limiting publications from 2001 2022. Our revealed that, among all OA-related macroalgae, only a relatively small proportion (n < 85) have examined physiological responses seaweeds. However, it is generally agreed that these cannot when critical biological systems are compromised. The approaches unbalanced overly focused monitoring cultivation methods. Future work should emphasise effective implementable actions against while linking changes production costs profits.

A laboratory level microcosm analysis of the impacts of ocean acidification on the environmental stress biomarkers in Portunus pelagicus (Linneaus 1758)exposed to a series of pH regimes expected in the year 2100 (pH 7.5 and 7.0) and leakage from a sub-seabed carbon dioxide storage site (pH 6.5 - 5.5) was carried out. Levels of the antioxidant enzyme catalase, the phase II detoxificatio...

There is growing scientific evidence that, as a result of increasing anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions, absorption of CO2 by the oceans has already noticeably increased the average oceanic acidity from pre-industrial levels. This global threat requires a global response. According to the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), continuing CO2 emissions in line with current t...

متن کاملSouthern Ocean pteropods at risk from ocean warming and acidification
Early life stages of marine calcifiers are particularly vulnerable to climate change. In the Southern Ocean aragonite undersaturation events and areas of rapid warming already occur and are predicted to increase in extent. Here, we present the first study to successfully hatch the polar pteropod Limacina helicina antarctica and observe the potential impact of exposure to increased temperature a...
